professional maintenance & repairs
at reasonable prices

Welcome! I operate a small bicycle repair shop at my home, tucked into the hills of Pomfret, Vermont. I have been an avid cyclist for over thirty years, and I learned early on how important maintenance is to the enjoyment of cycling.

While working as an apprentice at the Zuni Café, a restaurant in San Francisco, I could not afford to pay a mechanic to fix my bike, so I joined a club called "The Freewheel." We had a little garage with tools, a bike stand, and (fortunately) a mechanic to help out if I got in over my head. I took my bikes apart and learned about them every day I worked on them. I continue to learn every time I pick up a wrench.
In the early 1990s, as a mechanic at Tom Mowatt Cycles, I discovered how much I did not yet know. I had wonderful teachers, many of whom still work in the Upper Valley. For the past 20 years, I have been the Shop Manager for Discovery Bicycle Tours, formerly Bike Vermont Inc., in charge of keeping the fleet of 300 bicycles, in four countries, in great working condition.
Because I have low overhead, I can keep my prices low. I charge $35.00 per hour for labor and parts are reasonably priced.
Please note that it is not possible to work on a dirty bike. If your bike needs cleaning, that is the first thing I do. The average dirty bike takes 20 minutes (or $11.66) to clean - though it can take a lot longer. I love cleaning bikes and am happy to do yours, but if you want to save some money, send me a clean bike.
I do not have fixed per service rates.  I bill my labor by the hour, in 15 minute increments.  I treat your bike as if it were mine.  If you bring your bike to me I will give you an assessment of condition and estimate the cost of repairs.  I do not have a huge inventory of parts, and often have to order parts for you.  There sometimes is a shipping charge, usually $5 - 10, but sometimes more.  I offer free pick-up and delivery in Pomfret, and Woodstock.  Hanover and Norwich area customers can send me their bikes through the Norwich Bookstore.  Call me for details.  I am the only person working on bikes at ABS.  This is mostly an advantage, though when I am working at my two other jobs, sometimes it takes a little longer that I would like to get the work done.  I will try to be realistic with you about time when I give you my estimate.   I look forward to meeting you and helping you get the most out of your bicycles.
